HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

It's the most wonderful time of the year...but also the most wasteful! Did you know Americans create 23% more trash (and consume more natural resources) during the holidays? But we don’t have to! Being more aware of what and how we purchase during the holiday season can help make your holidays more meaningful, joyous, and sustainable!

When shopping for you or a loved one,
don't forget to S.M.I.L.E.!

It's easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of sales during the holidays! But much of what we buy has significant upstream impacts that occur before we buy a product—from resource extraction, production, and transportation—as well as downstream impacts, as many of our purchases eventually end up in the landfill. To help you make your buying decisions wisely this holiday season—and all year long—just remember to S.M.I.L.E.!

SDo you already have something SIMILAR?

Take stock of the things you already have. Do you (or the person you're buying a gift for) already own something similar, or have something else that can serve the same function?

M: Was it MADE sustainably?

Where does the company source their materials? Do they treat their workers well? Do they use minimal packaging that can be recycled or composted? When you prioritize asking these questions, it helps you support companies that are pioneering sustainable production.

I: Do you need it IMMEDIATELY?

Limited-time sales tend to make us think that RIGHT NOW is the only chance we have to buy an item. Take time to think if you really want or need the item. If you do need the item, is it because the item is broken or showing wear? Can the item be repaired, or replaced secondhand?

L: Will you LOVE it for a long time?

If you don't LOVE an item, there's a good chance it will be forgotten by next season. If you're buying a gift for someone else, take a moment to ask yourself if they'll use the item happily over a long period of time—and if it was designed to last year after year!

E: What happens to it at the END of its lifespan?

Before purchasing an item, think about what will happen at the end of its lifespan. Can it be recycled? Can it be repurposed for another use? Is it made to be durable so that it can be fixed and reused if it breaks? With the end of a product's life in mind, you'll help ensure less of what you purchase ends up in a landfill, and that's something to smile about!

Eco-Cycle staff members share what makes a gift really meaningful!

Gifts can be wonderful tokens of our love, appreciation, and friendship, but it's all too easy to buy things simply for the sake of having something to give. Turns out that well-loved gifts don't have to be new, expensive, or even "stuff." Here are a few of our staff's most cherished gifts.

One year for Christmas, my husband Steve and I gave each other the gift of plummeting through the air extremely quickly. We went to Moab, which is supposed to be one of the top destinations in the US for skydiving, and we weren’t disappointed. On top of that, we went in March and the cost of the experience was deeply discounted because outdoor adventures like that are less pleasant when it's freezing outside! - Kate Christian, Corporate Sustainability Manager

I still have a little metal box that holds a collection of 3x5 index cards onto which my older sister copied easy recipes for every occasion. She gifted this to me when I went out into the world on my own for the first time many years ago. Every time I see it, I think of her and how thoughtful it was of her to put time and care into finding these recipes, and handwriting them onto cards. - Dan Matsch, Director of Compost and Carbon Farming

I grow a variety of plants that I propagate by snipping a stem off and sticking it in water, or straight into the soil of a plant pot. These “clones” make great gifts for friends and family who are looking to grow their plant collection. Mint, basil, cranberry hibiscus, and aloe all make great propagations! This saves me money, time, and doesn’t create waste! Also, lots of items can be reused and decorated to make pretty plant pots! - Dempsey Perno, Logistics Coordinator

My Gramma always sends me books from her vast collection on gardening, homeopathy, and homesteading. I love that with these secondhand gifts she is passing her wisdom down to me and we cultivate this shared interest in living more harmoniously with nature. - Halie Cunningham, Environmental Educator

A few years ago I purchased a pretty t-shirt from a thrift store to make my sister a gift. I simply cut off the collar and the sleeves, then sewed the bottom up to create a t-shirt tote bag! - Alycia Bouyounan, Schools Program Administrator

I love to give homemade gifts because they’re one of a kind, personal, and affordable to make! This year I made bath bombs and most of the ingredients I already had at home from making DIY cleaning products. The best part is that homemade gifts can often be made and given package free!” - Kylie Byrd, Communications Specialist
