Senate Bill 25-163:
Battery Stewardship Programs in Colorado
Much of Colorado lacks access to safe battery collection and recycling programs. Improperly disposing of batteries in the trash, curbside recycling, or the environment can lead to soil and water pollution and pose serious fire danger that threatens the safety of residents, waste and recycling workers and infrastructure, and firefighters. Batteries contain valuable materials that should be recycled into new products.
SB25-163 is based on model laws in other states requiring battery producers to manage the end-of-life of their products by joining a Battery Stewardship Organization that will fund battery collection and recycling statewide. A broad coalition of recyclers, local governments, battery producers, and environmental groups have crafted and negotiated the bill to fit Colorado’s needs.
If you believe that Colorado should have a system to collect and recycle batteries, contact your state senator today!
SB25-163 faces a vote by all state senators as early as Friday, April 25.
