Eco-Cycle is drafting and advocating for the passage of several Zero Waste bills this legislative session, including:
- Moving forward with Producer Responsibility: Advancing an implementation plan for Colorado that promises to bring free recycling to all Coloradans starting in 2026!
- Anti-incineration (SB24-150): Prohibiting state funding of plastics-to-fuel processes, including pyrolysis, in Colorado. Plastics-to-fuel projects are currently being proposed in several parts of our state, and these false solutions demand significant time and resources from local and state governments, which could be better invested in real Zero Waste solutions that truly benefit our community, environment, and climate.
- State grant fund merger: The CDPHE, which oversees the FRWD and RREO grant programs, is proposing a bill that will combine the Front Range Waste Diversion (FRWD) program and the Recycling Resources Economic Opportunity (RREO) program into one statewide program that will expand access to more support for municipalities across Colorado.
- Waste management study for vapes (HB24-1069): Eco-Cycle has been an advisor on HB24-1069, which will direct the CDPHE to conduct a study on how to best tackle the problematic disposal of vapes.
- Right-to-repair for electronics: Eco-Cycle is supporting legislative efforts by our partner, Colorado Public Interest Research Group (CoPIRG), to make repairing household electronics more accessible, thereby extending product life span and reducing waste.
- Waste tire program: Eco-Cycle is supporting a bill that renews Colorado’s tire program, including a modest fee charged with every new tire purchase to help fund tire recycling solutions, paving the way to transform rubber tire waste into useful products such as road materials.
