Make your voice heard to help slash methane emissions in Colorado

Dear friends,

As environmental programs and efforts are being cut and weakened at the federal level, it is crucial that we get involved at the state and local levels to protect communities and ecosystems. During the month of February, we have the opportunity to make our voices heard as Coloradans. Let’s use it!

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment is in the process of updating landfill emission regulations and wants to hear from you!

Landfills are a major source of methane—a potent greenhouse gas that generates when organic discards, like food scraps and yard debris, break down without oxygen. This invisible pollutant leaks into our atmosphere, driving global warming at an alarming rate.

Methane traps heat in the atmosphere about 80 times more effectively than carbon dioxide in the short term. In the US, landfill methane emissions are equivalent to the pollution from 24 million passenger vehicles or 74 coal plants. Landfills also release harmful air pollutants that disproportionately impact low-income and communities of color nationwide.

View the fact sheet "Mountainous Methane: How Colorado can protect our climate and health by addressing emissions from landfills" in English or Spanish.

Eco-Cycle is leading a coalition of organizations to encourage the state of Colorado and the Air Quality Control Commission to adopt the strongest possible update to the state’s landfill methane control requirements, and we need your support!

During the month of February, you can make your voice heard by:

Do you live within two miles of a landfill in Colorado?

CDPHE especially wants to hear from Coloradans most impacted by landfill emissions. If you live within two miles of a landfill, email climatechange@state.co.us and request a one-on-one meeting or join a focus group.

How to tell if you live within two miles of a landfill: Check out CDPHE’s list of landfills and copy the address of your nearest landfill into Google Maps, which will tell you how close you live to it.

Our climate can’t wait!

Waste issues are climate issues, and with your input, Colorado can become a national leader in landfill emission reduction strategies.
