Good news: The most comprehensive plastic pollution reduction bill Colorado has seen is onto the Senate! We are closer to protecting our state from plastic that is a threat to our wildlife, air, water, and climate.

Wednesday, May 5, 2021: The Colorado House of Representatives voted to pass House Bill 1162 - The Plastic Pollution Reduction Act. With 40 "yes" votes, 23 "no" votes (and 2 excused), House Bill 1162 now moves to Senate committees for consideration.

Thank you all who have supported the passage of the Plastic Pollution Reduction Act through various House committees and for the final House floor vote that took place on May 5th!

Dear Representative: I’m writing today to encourage you to vote YES on House Bill 21-1162 - The Plastic Pollution Reduction Act. Right here in Colorado, tiny plastic particles called microplastics have been found in rain samples from Rocky Mountain National Park. Cattle, horses, and wildlife can suffocate from plastic bags polluting the environment. In fact, plastic bags are the number one source of litter in Colorado creek cleanups. Additionally, polystyrene take-out food containers leach styrene (a known carcinogen) into our food and can break down into microplastics that pollute our water, soil, and the food we eat. It’s time to reduce the amount of single-use plastics polluting Colorado. Nothing we use for a few minutes should be allowed to pollute our soil and water and persist in our landfills or environment indefinitely. As HB21-1162 comes to the House floor for a vote, this bill’s success is in your hands. To protect Colorado’s residents, wildlife, and environment, please make the Plastic Pollution Reduction Act a priority. We don’t have time to spare, as the plastics industry is revving up to increase its production by 33-36% in just four years. We can reverse this course, but we need champions like you to make change happen. Help Colorado reduce single-use plastics by supporting HB21-1162. Thank you.
