Take Direct, Local Climate Action by Adopting a Free Tree (or Shrub)!
Join Eco-Cycle, the Play Boulder Foundation, and the Cool Boulder Initiative in a Neighborhood Urban Forest Pilot Campaign this fall!
Communities must prepare for climatic extremes. The shade and evaporative cooling provided by trees and other plants will be an increasingly critical part of keeping communities safe and livable for humans and our ecological communities (like pollinators).
That’s why the City of Boulder, in collaboration with local partners like Eco-Cycle, has initiated Cool Boulder, a nature-based climate solutions campaign uniting community members to forge a resilient climate future.
This fall, we are building a Neighborhood Urban Forest together.
One of the initiatives of Cool Boulder is to plant a connected canopy of thousands of trees and shrubs, most of which will need to be located on private land (like your yard!). The Fairview, BCSIS and Crestview neighborhoods are participating in a new Neighborhood Urban Forest Pilot Program this year, and we need 35 participants from each neighborhood surrounding these schools to adopt a FREE TREE (or shrub)!
Participants will receive regular care support and communication from the PLAY Boulder Foundation Tree Trust. After you fill out the interest form, you’ll receive information about where to plant your tree or shrub, species options, and more. You will be supported throughout the process by Eco-Cycle, PLAY Boulder, and the Cool Boulder partners.
Here’s how YOU can be part of the solution through this pilot:
Step 1: Sign up to be part of the Neighborhood Urban Forest Pilot using the button below. You can adopt a tree or shrub, or multiples of either. We are specifically looking for folks in the Fairview, BCSIS, and Crestview neighborhoods, but a volunteer can live anywhere!
Step 2: Receive a FREE healthy tree or shrub. These trees and shrubs have been hand-picked by our tree expert partners, PLAY Boulder, to be part of our resilient, holistic urban canopy. You’ll learn more about the trees and shrubs, allowing you to select the planting that fits your needs and capacity. You can either pick up your tree or shrub at a central location in your neighborhood (most will fit easily in the trunk of a car), or if that is a challenge, you can have it delivered to your home.
Step 3: Plant your tree! We can provide physical help if needed, and supply local compost products to amend the soil, building on our Carbon Farming work.
Step 4: Care for your tree or shrub, watch it become part of the Neighborhood Urban Forest, and let us know how it’s going! We’ll keep you posted on tips to water and care for your tree, as well as other ways to get involved. We’ll ask YOU to keep US posted on how your tree or shrub is doing and on your experience with the campaign so we can learn from you how to spread the campaign to neighborhoods city-wide.
Fill out this interest form to claim your free tree/shrub or sign up to volunteer!
